The Film Producing workshop will delve into the art of production, providing you with the opportunity to plan your own short or feature film. Key topics will include film financing, crowdfunding, the producer’s paperwork, and the essential process of identifying your target audience.
You’ll gain valuable insights from a seasoned producer while also engaging with fellow participants, making the workshop more hands-on and interactive than typical online courses. Additionally, you’ll have the chance to discuss challenges you’ve faced in your own projects and receive constructive feedback to help resolve any issues in your future endeavors.
This workshop will explore how to develop, finance, and complete a movie from a creative producer’s perspective.
Participants are encouraged to bring an unproduced film project that’s in development, with a script or at least a pitch deck. Although scripts are not required, each participant will have the opportunity to present their project, discussing key elements such as the director, cast, location, audience, and budget. The group will act as potential buyers and will ask questions that need to be addressed.
The workshop will cover the following key areas:
- Developing Your Pitch and Presenting to Investors: logline, synopsis, partnerships, elevator/long pitch, budget, and audience
- Building Your Team: choosing a director, hiring a writer, casting, and selecting locations
- Legal Considerations: collaboration agreements, intellectual property rights, copyright, optioning, and purchasing
- Financing and Business Plan: revenue flow and projections, budget, financing methods (including crowdfunding, equity, pre-sales, gap financing, loans, and soft money)
- Post-Production Decisions: music rights, licenses, test screenings, and deliverables
- Marketing and Distribution: creating a plan, navigating film festivals, working with distributors and sales agents, and maximizing revenue both domestically and internationally
- Audience: understanding your audience demographics, box office comparables, and strategies to reach them—from promotion and marketing to release plans, film festivals, markets, theatrical and non-theatrical releases, VOD, community screenings, and direct sales.
